On behalf of the organizing committee, it is my great honor to announce to held the “19th International Conference on Flow Injection Analysis (19th ICFIA)” in Fukuoka, Japan, from 30th November to 5th December. We are very happy to welcome all of you from all over the world to the 19th ICFIA.
The ICFIA has been initiated by Prof. Gary D. Christian from 1989, in order to discuss new researches on FIA and its related techniques and to exchange ideas among their researchers as well as to deepen friendship together with participants. After that, the series of the ICFIA has been held every one or two years at places around all over the world. This is the second conference in Japan after the 15th ICFIA held in Nagoya in 2008.
Since the idea of FIA was proposed by Profs. Ruzicka and Hansen in 1975, it has been recognized as “rapid and automated chemical analysis”, “green analytical technique and zero-emission of wastes” and many papers have been published. In addition, this analysis is widely used in many fields such as environmental analysis, process control and quality control of industrial products, food sciences, medical and pharmaceutical sciences and clinical diagnosis. Especially the concept of FIA has been expanded to sequential injection, lab-on-a-valve, multi-syringe FIA, beads injection analysis etc. These flow-based analytical techniques have been expected as the ideal chemical analysis and have been developing still more and more.
In Japan “Japanese Association for Flow Injection Analysis (JAFIA)” has been established in 1983 for the purpose of development of researches and instruments on FIA and availability of FIA to many users as an alternatives of the batch analysis. The Japanese Standard Industry (JIS) on FIA has been established in 1995 as the general rule of chemical analysis, JIS K 0216 and in 2011 “flow-based analytical techniques for tests of water quality” has been finally established as JIS K 0170. Many members of JAFIA have contributed greatly to these establishments. This 19th ICFIA is supported by JAFIA as one of the branches of Japan Society for Analytical Chemistry. The last year JAFIA was 30 years old after establishment. In the 19th ICFIA, on this occasion we would like to celebrate the 30th anniversary of JAFIA with all the participants.
In this conference, we are planning to have invited lectures, oral and poster presentations by many researchers, especially younger researchers and students. The conference will cover the wide area of flow-base analytical methods. The topic of the conference includes the fundamental sciences related to the flow-base analysis and the innovative applications in many analytical fields such as environmental, food, medical and pharmaceutical sciences. In addition we are planning to have one day excursion to outside of Fukuoka by a bus tour.
Here Fukuoka is located in south area of Japan in the Kyushu island and the population is about 1.5 million and the 7th largest city in Japan. Fukuoka is near to Asian countries and the access from the Fukuoka Airport to the downtown in Fukuoka city is very convenient. In addition Fukuoka has both the atmosphere of the traditional old town and that of a modern city with many shopping stores and restaurants.
We would like to invite new friends as well as old friends in Fukuoka.
Toshihiko Imato (Chairperson of 19th ICFIA)
